Day Two: Idea Brainstorm

Key Question: What should we show our families at Back to School Night?

Formative Assessment/Learning Experience: Individual cards with pictures and/or labels of one or two things to include in the video or slideshow.

Have children think of the area of the room they’d like to draw and represent through pictures. Children may also label their pictures, or dictate words for you to write down. Hang all of the cards up on a chart to see if there are any common ideas (you can sort the pictures or children can if you have time).

If a child draws something unrelated to the task at hand, i.e. a favorite superhero or a family member, help support and redirect them to try again by taking a walk around the room again, or looking at examples provided by other children.

Children will be at all stages of literacy development. Some may even be very hesitant to draw, but will still have an idea. In this case, they can dictate their ideas and you can just words. If a child is more advanced in their writing, you might encourage that child to write labels or words for others in the class.
