In this module, we’ll explore the foundations of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) in early childhood and consider how essential skills—like self-regulation, communication, empathy, and problem-solving—can be naturally woven into project work. You’ll look closely at a project example to see where SEL shows up in action and then begin planning ways to intentionally nurture collaboration and independence in your own classroom projects.

In this module, we’ll rethink what literacy can look like in early childhood project work. Rather than viewing fluent reading and writing as prerequisites, we’ll broaden the definition of literacy to include meaning making, inquiry, speaking, listening, and language development. You’ll explore purposeful literacy structures that support emergent and early literacy and see how they can be woven into projects in ways that feel natural and engaging. Along the way, we’ll highlight opportunities for collaboration and critical thinking, and consider how stand-alone lessons and skill-building activities can strengthen children’s project experiences—all with the goal of building a holistic view of literacy in Project Based Learning that values children’s voices, questions, and growing skills at every stage.

In this module, we’ll explore the three types of assessment—of, for, and as learning—through the lens of early childhood. You’ll discover practical ways to assess content, product development, final products, and learning processes in a PBL classroom, while also beginning to build a toolbox of developmentally appropriate strategies. Along the way, you’ll identify formative assessment ideas you can bring directly into your own project planning.
